The earliest documents were written over 5000 years ago. It is understood that previously, this knowledge of health, longevity and wisdom was been passed down from master to disciple orally since time immemorial.

We are fortunate today to have direct access to Ayurvedic testing and dietary, lifestyle, and cleansing information. This was not true until the recent past.

One of the most basic principles of Ayurveda is to understand your constitution or prakruti.  Following the article, you will find an excellent Ayurveda Body Type Test that will help you, along with my help, to discover your constitution and dosha.

Your prakruti or constitution is defined by the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual state of your parents at the time of conception. It determines your individual physical, emotional, and psychological characteristics and tendencies. Understanding your unique constitution reveals and defines the appropriate foods, lifestyle practices and appropriate cleansing methods that will work best for you.

Ayurveda understands that there are primal energetic forces that influence nature and human beings. The universe and all beings are made up of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. All of creation is a constant interaction of these five elements.  The five elements are found in every living organism in unlimited varying combinations. Each element has specific qualities, which will then determine the constitution of an individual, based on the specific combination of the five elements. This combination also determines the predominant dosha, or disease or fault tendency of an individual.

• Kapha is made up of earth and water. These types tend toward heavier and thicker bodies, with deep but stubborn minds.
  
  
• Pitta types, predominated by water and fire, tend toward medium, strong bodies with a tendency toward inflammation. Mentally they are intelligent, sharp, critical and irritable.
  
  
• Vata types are predominated by air and ether. They tend to have a thin wiry body with a tendency toward digestive disorders such as gas and bloating.  Mentally they are agile and open minded yet scattered and anxious.

There are actually seven possible constitutional types that come from the three doshas. They are: vata, pitta, kapha, vata-pitta, pitta-kapha, vata-kapha, vata-pitta-kapha.

Dosha means disease tendency or fault tendency. We all get out of balance. The way we are when we are at our best is as unique as the way we are when we go out of balance. By understanding and accepting our individual tendency of imbalance, we can then know how make the appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes necessary to regain balance once again. Ayurveda insists that we know ourselves at our best and our worst.

There are basically two types of doshic imbalances. They are natural and personal.  Natural causes are due to time, such as aging and season, such as severe heat or cold.

Personal imbalances are due to personally inappropriate foods and lifestyle practices. Also immune issues such as candida, parasites, bacteria, viruses, and chemical and heavy metal toxicity are also responsible for dosha imbalances.
